New Year's Eve Appetizers

Writer: Sierra ReneeSierra Renee

Whether you’re planning an elegant party, a casual get-together, or a cozy night in, appetizers are a New Year's Eve staple. These simple, bite-sized delights offer your guests a taste of luxury and creativity while keeping the energy up until the clock strikes twelve. This is your guide to crafting a small bites menu that pairs perfectly with champagne toasts!

Oysters

When buying oysters for your New Year's Eve celebration, Whole Foods is a great place to start. Known for its high-quality seafood, Whole Foods offers a variety of fresh oysters. Personally I am a fan of Atlantic Oysters but I recommend chatting with the seafood counter staff for recommendations! The best thing about Whole Foods is that they will even shuck them for you if you plan to serve within an hour or so.

To elevate your oysters, prepare a classic mignonette: combine finely minced shallots, a splash of red wine vinegar, and a pinch of cracked black pepper.

Caviar

Another easy yet elegant option that you can pickup from your local Whole Foods is caviar. Whether you’re splurging or sticking to a budget, Whole Foods offers a variety of options, including their own brand. To serve, pair the caviar with potato chips or mini pancakes and a dollop of crème fraîche. While Whole Foods carries crème fraîche, you can also make it at home with just buttermilk and heavy cream. This luxurious bite is sure to add a touch of sophistication to your celebration.

Smoked Salmon Bites

Smoked salmon bites are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser—they’re elegant, delicious, and incredibly simple to prepare! Start with a sturdy base like HEB’s sea salt round pita chips or your favorite small round cracker. Pipe a dollop of whipped cream cheese onto each cracker using a piping bag with a large, round tip for a polished look. Top with a small piece of smoked salmon and garnish with a sprinkle of freshly chopped chives. These delightful bites come together effortlessly and are sure to impress your guests.

Brie/Prosciutto/Apple Bites

As many of you know, I’m a big fan of making charcuterie boards, but for New Year’s Eve, I prefer serving easy, one-bite appetizers that guests can grab and enjoy while mingling. These charcuterie-inspired bites bring together all your favorite elements! Start with a French baguette from the grocery store, slicing it into ¼-inch rounds and toasting them to a nice crisp. Layer each slice with creamy brie, prosciutto, and an apple slice for the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and creamy. These elegant bites are simple to make and packed with flavor, making them an instant hit.

Mini Dessert Bites

For one final Whole Foods hack, consider their mini desserts for New Year’s Eve. Since a full dessert can feel out of place without a complete dinner, and serving timing can be tricky, mini treats are the perfect solution. Whole Foods’ bakery offers a delightful variety, including bites such as lemon tarts, raspberry cheesecakes, and key lime pies. A selection of these bite-sized desserts ensures guests can easily enjoy a sweet treat, while reducing waste at the end of the night.

As you prepare to ring in the New Year, the best celebrations are about more than just great food—they’re about creating memories and connection. With these easy yet elegant appetizers, you'll be sure to impress your guests. Here’s to a sparkling New Year filled with delicious memories and exciting new beginnings!
