Top 5 Places to Eat in Tulum

The beach zone in Tulum has endless places to eat. From small, locally owned taco shops to high-end restaurants with some of the world’s best chefs, you cannot go wrong with food in Tulum. Here are my Top 5 Places to Eat in Tulum!

1. Kin Toh

$$$$

Having traveled the world and eaten some amazing food, Kin Toh at Azulik has now risen to the top 3 restaurants I have ever eaten at. Stop reading and make a reservation NOW. I made our reservation a month in advance, and it was the only dinner reservation left for the entire 4 nights we were in Tulum. Please note, Kin Toh is expensive, but between the atmosphere, the service, and the incredible food, it’s beyond worth it. Nestled into the trees, it feels as if you are eating in a luxury treehouse.

We ordered for our appetizer the Fish Crudo and Poblano Risotto. Our main course was the Catch of the Day (Sea Bass) and the Fresh Pasta (which came highly recommended by our waiter).

2. Rosa Negra

$$$

Rosa Negra is a Latin American Steakhouse and a ton of fun for dinner. They had a live DJ playing music all night, a huge food selection, and super fun drinks. Sam couldn’t decide on his first drink, so he asked to be surprised. Out walks our server with a steaming cocktail topped with a decorative skull! I personally chose the wine for the night.

For our appetizer, we ordered the Bogavante Aguachile Ceviche. They also brought out bread. (Side note: Most restaurants in Tulum include UNREAL bread. Save room. Trust me.) We ordered the Surf and Turf to share for our main course, which was a 14oz Mediterranean Lobster with an 11oz Filet. It’s hard for me to not order dessert... Chocolate Sphere it was. A GIANT martini glass comes out with a chocolate sphere hiding dulce de leche ice cream and berries that melts with hot caramel poured on top.

3. Matcha Mama

Yes - Matcha Mama is worth the hype. It is not just a cute Instagram spot; Matcha Mama is a must stop for breakfast or a healthy snack during the day! We had their Acai Berry Bowl, the Iced Matcha Latte with added agave, and a ginger shot. I buy Iced Matcha Lattes frequently, and I make my own. This one was perfectly made! Sam even asked to go back every day!

4. Posada Margherita

$$

Fresh-made pasta and pizza right on the beach, what is better than that? Lucky for us, Posada Margherita was just one resort down from ours. This is an absolute must-eat with a relaxed environment where you can truly enjoy a moment of peace with good food. You might think it’s odd to get pasta and pizza in Mexico, but they know what they are doing! We tried to get a pizza to go for our trip back to the airport, but it was sadly still too early in the morning!

We ordered the Prosciutto Funghi Pizza and the Al Gamberie Zucchini Pasta.

5. La Eufemia

This is a hidden gem; I am SO excited to share it with you. Recommended by a local waiter, we followed a dark alley with a ceiling lined with beer bottles. After a short walk, we popped out on a porch balcony overlooking the ocean and a very casual beach bar. Want to know the best part? It’s DOG friendly. At least 8 dogs were rolling in the sand, making new friends, and enjoying their best life as every doggo deserves. The patrons were a mix of locals on lunch break and people who seemed to be what I like to call "long-term vacationers". When a place in the middle of a tourist area draws in those two groups, you know it’s a hidden gem!

Almost everything on the menu was priced under $5 USD. We enjoyed 3 different types of tacos and some cheap beers.

It would take 3 more trips to hit all the places we wanted to. Once we got there, we learned so much. Here are a few more tips!

Looking for more ideas? Wait until you get there to find your own hidden gems. Ask the local bartenders or shop owners for unique places. When looking at the restaurants at the beach clubs for the evening, ask your resort if they can reserve it for you. Sometimes there is a minimum spend or a cover charge to even sit. Our resort was able to wave those and get us in somewhere with no availability online just hours before!

Traveling on a budget? Keep in mind, when finding restaurants, the places you see the influencers and models on Instagram going to are extremely expensive. There are TONS of other excellent options that won’t break the bank but still provide a great experience and taste!

Heart set on a particular place? Lookup if you can make a reservation in advance. In peak seasons and especially on the weekend, if you do not have a reservation at those that allow it in advance, the chances of you getting in are slim.

Worried about cash vs. card? All the big restaurants take a card. Most of the smaller places do as well, but it’s good to have some cash just in case. If you are unsure, their websites will typically have it listed as “cash only” prominently.
